Dale Carnegie’s Words Ring True Today


I recently attended a workshop on social media sponsored by the local Dale Carnegie Training organization in Washington, DC. At the end of the session, a small book titled, Dale Carnegie’s Golden Book, was on the table for anyone to pick up. No one made a big deal about it but, of course, as an author, I am always interested in any type of book. This one is about 3 inches by 3 inches and folds out to include about ten pages.
However, this little book is filled with great advice! No matter how many times I hear some of these ideas, I am reminded that if something is true and powerful, it is probably timeless.
One section of this little book is titled, Principles from How to Win Friends and Influence People, the best seller published in 1936 and has sold over 50 million copies worldwide! My parents gave me a copy of that book when I graduated from college and I still have it and hope I live up to their expectations for me! There are several sub-headings but I thought the most powerful were the first nine principles titled:

“Become a Friendlier Person”

1. “Don’t criticize, condemn or complain.”
2. “Give honest, sincere appreciation.”
3. “Arouse in the other person an eager want.”
4. “Become genuinely interest in other people.”
5. “Smile.”
6. “Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.”
7. “Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.”
8. “Talk in terms of the other person’s interests.”
9. “Make the other person feel important—and do it sincerely.”

I hope some of these principles ring true for you today—I think they are even more important now than when Mr. Carnegie wrote them. In our busy, disconnected world, how we treat each other makes a huge difference in how we are perceived, how we are treated by others and how we succeed.
